Abstract

Earth science phenomena, such as earthquakes, climate variability and volcanic eruptions are often unpredictable in space and time, but conform to underlying patterns that are sometimes curious and unexpected. In this talk we’ll explore some of the more unusual patterns and ask what they might tell us about the Earth as a whole.

About the speaker

Graham Heinson is Professor of Geophysics at the University of Adelaide. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh, and then became a marine geophysicist PhD at ANU. After various postdocs in Tokyo, San Diego and at Flinders University, he started at the University of Adelaide in 2000. His research group works with various geophysical techniques that image the Earth from the top few metres to the top few hundred kilometres, and are thinking about how to apply the same approaches to the Moon and Mars. Other projects include the national magnetotelluric mapping programme and 4D monitoring of fluids for hydrocarbon and geothermal development. His group have been finalists for the Eureka awards in the category Land and Water, and winners of the Australian Innovation Challenge in the category Minerals and Energy. In 2016 Graham was founder, and is currently co-leader, of the National Exploration Undercover School, a national three-week summer school in South Australia for thirty of the best students developing careers in the mineral industry.
