Raku is a spectacular Japanese firing method that takes pieces out of the kiln read hot! For this workshop we’ll be taking your pieces out of the kiln then placing them in vessels filled with sawdust that ignites on contact! We then put the lid on and let them reduce and cool for a bit before taking them out and quenching them in water (most pieces anyway). The colours and effects you get from raku are stunning and the process is both daunting and exhilarating! This is a fun two part workshop to make your own pieces to then take through the amazing raku firing process in my gas fired raku kiln.
The 2024 workshop dates are:
Making 1-3pm Sat 25th February & Firing from 10:30am Sat 16th March
Making 1-3pm Sun 26th May & Firing from 10:30am Sat 8th June
Making 12:30-2:30pm 8th September & Firing from 10:30am Sat 28th September
During the making workshop at the studio I’ll share more about the raku firing process and what you need to consider when making to give you the best chance of success in the raku firing.
For the firing workshop we’ll be in my garden as it’s outdoors with a gas fired kiln. It does mean the workshop is weather dependent but if it is postponed we simply find the next best day to try again. You will get the full experience as you take your piece from the kiln and place it in your own container of sawdust. All safety equipment is provided (goggles, gloves and tongs) and I’ll run through the details of the firing as we go.
