Are you thinking of adding a personal touch to the heart of your home or a cherished piece of furniture? Open a door to your new kitchen with the preparation you need to create the perfect set of custom cabinet doors. This two-evening workshop will provide attendees with the knowledge and skills required to make traditional cabinetry doors using rail and stile router bits. The workshop will cover design choices, selecting and dimensioning wood, and hands-on step-by step guidance on how to prepare, rout and assemble rails (tops and bottoms) and stiles (sides) using specialized bits which are part of Makespace’s router bit collection. This will include use of bits to make raised inset panels.
Participants will also receive hands-on guidance on how to make and install muntins (the vertical and horizontal wooden pieces that separate glass panes), how to make a curved arch on a cabinet door, and various other techniques for making inset panels. There will also be time dedicated to explaining and demonstrating the use of euro-style hinges to install doors, and the choices available (inset, partial overhang and full overhang doors). Please note, this instructional workshop aims to support your planning and preparation to design your own set of cabinet doors, rather than completing the set during the time allocated.
Closed-toed shoes are required. Wear well-fitting clothes that can get dirty. Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the shop. If you have your own or prescription Z87-rated eyewear, you are welcome to bring and use them but we will have safety glasses and overglasses on hand to lend.
As a special offer associated with this workshop, participants will also receive a 20% discount on their next month of membership at Yukonstruct’s Makespace to continue using our tools, be it your first, fifth, or fiftieth month among us.
The instructor, Murray Long, is an experienced furniture and cabinetry maker who has made dozens of rail and stile doors over the years, for a wide range of applications. He is looking forward to this opportunity to share his knowledge and de-mystify the process of making rail and stile doors.
