Tonight we kick off our Summer Speaker series at the Million Dollar Theater. We are working to program a series of great movies with Q&As with the filmmakers who made them and/or inspired by them. We start with a double feature of the Indiana Jones all-time classic Raiders of the Lost Ark on 35mm followed by Raiders the Adaptation, the unbelievable near shot for shot remake a group of kids made in the 1980's based on their love for the movie.

And we cap off the night with a Q&A with the director of that adaptation, Eric Zala, who has made one of the most unbelievable movies of all time.

First up, we start with the source: 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark on 35mm, starring Harrison Ford as swashbuckling if constantly in trouble archeologist Henry "Indiana" Jones, directed by Steven Spielberg, script by Lawrence Kasdan, from a story by George Lucas and Phillip Kaufman.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is still to this day, forty one years after its release, THE PLATINUM STANDARD when it comes to popcorn summer blockbuster movies.

Spielberg had just come off his first miss, the World War II comedy 1941 and been turned down by Cubby Broccoli to direct a James Bond movie (!!) when his friend George Lucas, flush with the success of Star Wars, offered Spielberg the chance to redeem.

After a now famous brainstorming session between Lucas, Kasdan, and Spielberg, the story was hatched.

Indiana Jones reunites with fiery ex-flame Marion to find the biblical Ark of the Covenant, reputed to have supernatural powers, before it falls into the hands of Hitler and the Nazis.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of those Hollywood miracles that astonishes to this day. Romantic, with breathless wall to wall incredible action sequences, Raiders is powered by the directorial brilliance of Spielberg, the charismatic screen presence of Ford and Allen, and the story telling genius of George Lucas.

After a one hour break for folks to go grab dinner and dranks at the next door Grand Central Market, we return to screen Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation.

Childhood friends Eric Zala, Chris Strompolos, and Jayson Lamb were so blown away by Raiders that they come up with what seemed like a simple plan. Raiders was approximately 500 shots. So if they spent each day of the summer getting between 5-10 shots, they'd be able to re-shoot the entire movie before school started.

Little did these childhood friends know it would take lighting friends' basements on fire, crazy dangerous car stunts, and over 25 years to complete (they filmed the famous missing "airplane fight sequence in 2014!!). The result is one of the most inspiring things you will ever see. And the very definition of moviemaking: these three friends did the impossible because they didn't know enough to know they couldn't do it.

We follow the screening with an onstage Q&A with director Eric Zala who now lives large in filmmaker lore for what he committed himself too and pulled off.

So bring your family and join us for a magical night of a great movie, its great tribute, and a Q&A with the people who made it!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
