Ragwort is a beautiful plant which plays an important ecological role when in balance with other meadow species. But left unchecked, ragwort can take over fields – previously we had up to 60 plants per square metre, but we are gradually getting on top of it. We have oversown with local wildflower meadow seed and are already seeing improvements in biodiversity. Our aim is not to eradicate ragwort but to bring it under control – after it flowers, and crucially before it sets seed. This year we thought we'd arrange an open day and invite anyone who would like to spend some time pulling ragwort with us from 10-12.
There will be tea/coffee/squash throughout, and we'll provide a light vegetarian lunch afterward. We will provide gloves. After lunch there will be time to have a look around the smallholding and discuss how we're approaching low-impact living.
Getting there: if you live nearby, please walk or cycle – there is no parking on-site. If you need to drive there is a pay and display at The Old Station, two minutes' walk from us.
Please let us know if you plan on coming so we can plan refreshments. If the weather looks poor, keep an eye on this page as we may postpone.
