Abstract: Since the early 20th century, archaeology in Palestine and Israel has defined its mission as allowing the bright light of science to shine on the deep layers of history, purifying them of error and superstition. Sites are “opened” and their layers “exposed”, and this always begins by “breaking the surface” and “removing topsoil”. The Qadas village project stays entirely on the surface. Clearing only vegetation and occasional rain-wash, scavenging what lies on top, we take the role of witnesses observing destruction and later interventions. In my talk, I reflect on what we need to unlearn and what, if anything, archaeology has to offer to a more complete understanding of Qadas since 1948.
Bio: After graduate studies (Hebrew University) and editing IAA publications (1985-2000), I began teaching at Tel Aviv University, with field projects in Jerusalem (Ir Ganim community excavations, 2000-6), Tel Bet Yerah (2003-19) and Qadas (2021-3). My research focus has been on the Bronze and Iron Age Levant and on the impact of archaeology in the present. I am a board member of Emek Shaveh.
