Radical Nonfiction Book Group with Carlo
Discussing Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto by Kohei Saito
Led by former Greenlight bookseller Carlo, our Radical Nonfiction Book Group meets monthly to read and discuss nonfiction titles related to the issues of history, politics, and the promise of a better world, just around the corner!
For October, the group discusses the international bestseller Slow Down by Japanese philosopher Kohei Saito. Saito argues that while unfettered capitalism is often blamed for inequality and climate change, subsequent calls for “sustainable growth” and a “Green New Deal” are a dangerous compromise. Advocating, instead, for degrowth and deceleration in order to effectively reverse climate change and save the planet—Slow Down outlines Kaito's argument of returning to a system of social ownership so that we can restore abundance and focus on those activities that are essential for human life.
