Join us for book reading and signing event with author Laura Arata as she discusses her book, Race in the Wild West: Sarah Bickford, the Montana Vigilantes, and the Tourism of Decline, 1870-1930. Born enslaved in eastern Tennessee, Sarah Bickford made her way to Montana Territory, where she settled in the mining boomtown of Virginia City. In Race in the Wild West Arata examines Sarah Bickford's life in all its complexity. Laura Arata is Assistant Professor of History at Oklahoma State University, where she specializes in public history and the history of race and gender in the American West. Books will be available for sale and light refreshments will be served.
