About this Event
"Mind blowing" "Brilliant" "I will never look at these streets the same again" This 90-minute walking tour of Lower Gardiner Street and its laneways, has featured on RTÉ Lyric FM, Culture Night 2023 and with numerous schools, colleges and community groups. Using stories of local buildings and places, Richard Carson invites participants to reimagine our relationships with the place and with one another. Using history, theology and much more, we will encounter how the colonial imagination was established in the place of the north east inner city and is still yet to be exorcised. New features for 2024 include a local wedding that united two settings of 19th century colonialism from opposite sides of the world and how what happened at the site of Store St. Garda Station over 250 years ago reminds us that so-called “new communities” are not so new after all. The old favourites, such as the racist hymn sung locally that reached the bookshelves of millions and how the history of Black musical performance in the area reaches far deeper that many imagine, are still all present.
