Quotable Speaker Series

Sarasota Art Museum’s Quotable Speaker Series invites visitors to hear from artists, curators, and contemporary creatives who spark new ways of thinking about art, architecture, and creative practice. SAM Quotables is where Sarasota gathers to share new ideas and be inspired.

Join ceramic artist, designer, and illustrator Molly Hatch to celebrate the unveiling of her hand-painted “plate painting” installation in the Museum’s Jan Schmidt Loggia and Mark and Irene Kauffman Arcade. The artist will discuss how inherited objects and their legacy inform her practice, in which she transforms and deconstructs traditional decorative arts patterns and motifs. Enjoy this special talk and see her large-scale installation, AMALGAM, consisting of more than 450 hand-painted plates.

About Molly Hatch

Molly Hatch is a ceramic artist and designer best known for large-scale wall installations composed of her hand-painted ceramic plates. For nearly twenty years, she has worked to merge the physicality and meaning of ceramic forms with a painterly surface, transforming and deconstructing traditional patterns and motifs sourced from her research into the history of decorative arts and painting. Hatch’s artwork has been exhibited internationally with permanent installations in multiple museums, including Physic Garden (2014) at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia and Repertoire (2017) at the Newark Museum of Art in Newark, New Jersey. In 2023, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, Canada commissioned and acquired her work titled Ducere, reinterpreting a Christopher Dresser design where it debuted at the recent exhibition “ParalElles: History of Women in Design.” In 2023, Hatch also completed seven commissioned pieces for Tiffany & Co. The Landmark in Manhattan, as well as stores in Dubai and Taipei. She lives and works in Florence, Massachusetts.

Following her talk , Molly Hatch will sign copies of her book, A Passion for China: A Little Black Book About the Objects We Eat From, Live With and Love
