QuinTango, a DC based Tango quintet, invites you to embark on a captivating journey through the soulful and evocative world of tango. In their mesmerizing performances, they not only present classic and original tangos but also unravel the rich tapestry of the tango's origin by delving into the immigrant narrative that birthed this iconic art form.At the Timucua, QuinTango presents an enchanting repertoire that includes original tangos composed by our Argentine bandoneon player and the singer/songwriter bass player. These contemporary compositions reimagine the same emotional landscape that gave birth to the original tangos in the 19th century.
The roots of tango trace back to the Angolan slaves who brought their distinctive dance steps to the vibrant cultural melting pot of Argentina. As the story unfolds, you'll discover how the Italians contributed their passion for song and opera, Eastern European Jewry introduced virtuoso violinists and Roma-inflected melodies, and the Germans bestowed the bandoneon, an instrument that would become synonymous with tango's signature sound. The tango, once a local sensation, transcended borders and found its way to the romantic streets of Paris, where it gained international acclaim.
