In June 2020, Quin Kirchner released The Shadows and the Light (Astral Spirits/Spacetone), the highly-anticipated followup to his 2018 debut album, The Other Side of Time. Picking up where The Other Side left off, The Shadows leads the listener on a journey through the various colors and textures that make up Kirchner's sound-world - from big band funk & adventurous jazz to moody ballads & group experimentalism - across nearly 90 minutes over 2 LPs.
Jordannah Elizabeth at Chicago Reader called it "a tightly plotted-out dream world that showcases Kirchner’s creative spirit, as well as the seriousness and refinement he brings to the table” and Peter Margasak wrote in Downbeat “[Kirchner] reinforces his sharp abilities as an assimilator and bandleader on his superb second album, deftly enfolding local traditions with contemporary practices.” In his review for Pitchfork, Jonathan Williger wrote “[t]he outstanding Chicago-based drummer incorporates ideas from the city’s iconic forebears and ever-evolving jazz scene into his own fluid style.”
Released in the throes of the pandemic-ridden summer of 2020, a live, in-person release concert was not possible at the time. This concert will serve as Quin's first opportunity to perform the music from The Shadows and the Light for an in-person audience and with a full lineup.
