Napier — come along to our presentation and discover how to make tsunami evacuations quicker, safer, and more effective.📅 Date: Wednesday, 19 March.
🕒 Time: 6pm – 7pm.
đź“Ť Location: Napier Boys High School Hall, 31 Chambers Street, Napier.
As part of the Quicker, Safer Tsunami Evacuation project by GNS Science, view models by GNS Science on agent-based evacuation modelling to simulate evacuation for foot and car following a long (longer than a minute) or strong (hard to stand up in) earthquake that could cause a large tsunami.
This is the first time an entire city in New Zealand has been modelled in this way, making it a milestone for Napier and an invaluable opportunity for our community to learn:
✅ Why practising multiple evacuation routes matters—avoid landslides or liquefaction.
✅ Why evacuating on foot or bike is safest—keep roads clear for those unable to evacuate by foot or bike and reduce congestion.
✅ Why a long or strong earthquake is your best warning sign— if it’s long or strong, get gone!
The models combine cutting-edge research with the latest tsunami evacuation maps released in October last year, providing a comprehensive picture of evacuation routes and challenges for Napier.
GNS Science, Hawke’s Bay CDEM and Napier City Council will be available following the presentation to answer questions on the models, tsunami evacuation zone, preparedness and planning.
