About this Event
Join us for QUEER YOUR YEAR, a freeform zine space for creativity, community, and connection! On January 26th from 6-9PM, a collective of local grassroots organizations will gather with community members at Drunken Monkey Coffee Bar for an evening of zine-making and camaraderie.
Zines have a long history of being a community practice to communicate and share ideas. They’ve been a tool of protest, of art and critiques, of radical information sharing, of professing and processing Queer feelings, of creative outlet, and so much more.
Queer zines have not only been used for expression, not only as a tool for sharing information, but have most importantly been a radical and powerful way of connecting and strengthening our community at times when Queerness has been criminalized, politicised, and censored.
Today, our fight for Queer and collective liberation is far from over. It is vital that we stand in solidarity and form community networks that encourage us to take care of each other now and for the long haul. We’re encouraging you to celebrate your queerness by finding your place within the community.
We’re inviting our community to join us as we create zines together that remind us of our Queer roots, help us remain steadfast as we move towards a better future, and start the year off queer as hell! We encourage you to get connected to a new org during this event, and find continued ways to contribute to your community!
All materials and art supplies needed to create the zines will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own materials to work with as well!
This space is lovingly curated by Queer Trans Project and Basically Wonderful! More details on our community partners for this event will be available soon!
Accessibility Info:
Masks are required to participate, and we will have some available for those who cannot provide their own. Food and drinks will be available for purchase through the venue, and there will be outdoor seating provided for unmasking and eating. There will also be an air purifier inside of the venue during the event.
Parking is limited at Drunken Monkey itself, so if the lot gets full we recommend parking in Colonial Plaza (across the street from the venue) or finding street parking in the neighborhood behind the venue. There are two disabled parking spots in front of the venue, and the entrance should be wheelchair accessible.
The interior uses string lights and ambient lighting as opposed to harsh overhead lights. The space will be crowded as it is small, but we will do our best to keep walkways clear and wide. There will be music playing over the speakers, and we will try to keep the volume at a moderate low level. The bathrooms should be wheelchair accessible.
Please do not hesitate to reach out ahead of time to let us know about access needs at [email protected] or let us know how we can adjust if something comes up during the event. We want you to be as comfy as possible, and want to prioritize access in this space.
