We are thrilled to announce Queer L e n s, an exhibition dedicated to exploring the intricate social landscape through a queer lens. This exhibition aims to provide a platform for artists to delve into the multifaceted experiences and narratives that shape queer identities and communities. By inviting artists to engage with specific themes, we hope to foster a rich dialogue that highlights the diversity and complexity of queer experiences.Artists are encouraged to select from five thoughtfully curated themes that serve as a foundation for their creative expression. These themes are:
Gender & Sexuality: This theme invites artists to explore the fluidity and spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations. Works may reflect personal journeys, societal norms, or the challenges and triumphs faced by individuals navigating these aspects of their identities.
History: Artists can delve into the rich tapestry of queer history, highlighting pivotal moments, figures, and movements that have shaped the LGBTQIA+ community. This theme encourages a reflection on the past and its impact on present-day experiences and future aspirations.
Queer Icons: This theme celebrates the influential figures within the queer community, from artists and activists to everyday heroes. Artists are invited to interpret what it means to be a queer icon and how these individuals have inspired change, fostered acceptance, and created visibility.
Activism: In a world where advocacy remains crucial, this theme focuses on the power of activism within the queer community. Artists can explore the various forms of activism, from grassroots movements to digital campaigns, and reflect on the ongoing fight for rights, representation, and equality.
Intersectionality: Recognising that queer identities intersect with various social categories, this theme encourages artists to examine the complexities of race, class, ability, and other identities within the queer experience. This theme aims to highlight the importance of inclusivity and the diverse narratives that exist within the LGBTQIA+ community.
We are excited to see how artists will engage with these topics, bringing their personal insights and creative visions to life.
Queer L e n s promises to be a vibrant celebration of creativity, identity, and the power of art to challenge perceptions and inspire change. Join us in this exploration of the queer experience, and let us collectively amplify voices that deserve to be heard.
Queer L e n s is proudly presented by TBH Studio in partnership with the City of Ballarat’s LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee as part of Ballarat Pride Month.
