Queer Icons & Trailblazers: An Art Tour for WorldPride DC 2025
Join art historian and licensed tour guide Tosca Ruggieri for an unforgettable exploration of LGBTQ+ history, identity, and artistic expression at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery. Celebrate the vibrant history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community through compelling portraits and groundbreaking works that highlight the power of queer artistry.
Discover the stories behind each piece as we uncover the legacies of trailblazing artists, activists, and icons. From Walt Whitman’s poetic vision to Andy Warhol’s reinvention of fame, from Gertrude Stein’s influential salon to Mickalene Thomas’s bold, unapologetic art, this guided experience offers a deeper look at how art has shaped and reflected queer resilience, visibility, and pride.
This 1.5–2 hour in-person tour promises to be a powerful journey of empowerment, diversity, and creativity. Whether you’re an art lover, history enthusiast, or simply curious to see the museum through a new lens, this experience will challenge perspectives, spark conversation, and celebrate the legacy of queer icons.
We are offering this tour as a Small Group Tour, limited to 15 people, on select dates. The first tour will take place on Sunday, May 18th at 2 PM. If this date fills up, we will have a waitlist or may open an additional date.
