QUEER HILLBROW PRIDE TOUR

This inner-city tour allows us to celebrate South Africa's collective queer heritage, as there is no queer pride without queer history.
Dlala Nje has joined forces with GALA to take you on a journey through the streets of Hillbrow. We'll learn about how queer people of all races and classes experienced life in the city in the 60s, 70s and 80s versus how they experience life in the city today. We'll also hear about how the struggle for queer rights was bravely fought for in parallel to the struggle against the Apartheid regime, and pay tribute to those activists who have shaped the South African queer community.
Starting at Ponte we'll set the scene and learn about some of the key historical moments in South Africa's queer history. We'll then hit the streets, and take our time learning about the spaces and places where gay people would come for safety and fun in Hillbrow, which was colloquially labelled a "pink neighbourhood" in the 70s!
We'll visit historic sites and we'll share the stories of those that have come before us - bravely shaping social, political and judicial movements towards the struggle for equality and freedom.
