About this Event

Queer life is a collage of identities and experiences. As we come out, fall in love, meet friends, and make a life for ourselves, we pull fragments of self together to make a whole person. In this workshop, participants will use collage to explore queerness as they assemble an 8″x10″ collage on paper they can take home. The workshop is led by Kolaj Institute artist-in-residence , Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"I consider collage a space of queer potential, as well as a metaphorical parallel to the process of composting—a natural recycling of matter in which a prolific range of transformations occur." Piehl wrote, "I desire to capture the beauty of what surrounds us, both natural and synthetic as well as the existential crisis of a trajectory with our planet directly created by harmful relationships to consumer objects and the impacts of their visual culture. And for me, it is an attempt to interpret this paradox as a genderqueer person and an artist. The resulting visual ambiguity is an invitation for the viewer to decipher the source material, question their preconceived notions about nature and beauty, and acknowledge the complex realizations that such questions can evoke."

The workshop is free but space is limited. Registration is required. Materials are provided. This is an in-person event and will neither be live-streamed nor recorded.

ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE'S SOLO RESIDENCIES

The mission of Kolaj Institute is to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. We operate a number of initiatives meant to bring together community, investigate critical issues, and raise collage’s standing in the art world. Kolaj Institute’s Solo Residencies are designed to provide artists, curators, and writers with dedicated time and space to work on a project, develop their practice, and make artwork.
