QUEER BRITISH GEMS: Love is The Devil (1998)
John Maybury’s Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998) is a raw, stylish portrait of one of one of the most iconic painters of all time. Starring Derek Jacobi as Bacon and Daniel Craig as his lover and muse George Dyer, the film explores their turbulent relationship in 1960s London — a mix of passion, obsession, and self-destruction.
Shot through with Maybury’s bold, experimental style, the film mirrors Bacon’s own paintings: distorted, sensual, and unflinching in the face of the truth of flesh. Far form your average biopic, Love Is the Devil is an impressionistic study of art, queerness, and the destructive edge of desire.
