On Thursday the 16th of October, Queen Olivia III will grace Schrödinger's Books with their presence to talk about their book 'The Cat Operator's Manual,' a hilarious guidebook for getting the most out of your "cuddle-unit."'The Cat Operator’s Manual: Getting the Most from Your New Cuddle Unit' is the debut book by Queen Olivia III, published by Chronicle Books. Styled as an illustrated instruction manual, it reimagines the household cat as a machine—Cuddle Unit 5™—complete with operating modes, maintenance requirements, and troubleshooting tips. With affectionate parody and meticulous illustration, the book turns feline mystery into a handbook of absurd precision.
About the author:
Queen Olivia III is a writer, illustrator, drag performer, and software engineer based in Wellington, New Zealand, whose work marries technical precision with surreal humour. They have contributed essays and commentary to The Daily Blog and The Sapling, written for Stuff including the opinion piece “Don’t like wearing a mask? Try this for inconvenience,” and appeared as a guest on RNZ’s “Nights” programme to discuss their techno-feline vision. Their creative practice spans visual, live, and screen performance—acting in the independent film Eulogy for a Tunnel, appearing in the web series Dropped Pie, and performing in the television series The Strip (credited as LaQuisha Redfern). They were also featured by the Los Angeles Times at CatCon 2024. They have been profiled in Canvas magazine, appeared on Höpt Soda’s Nön Usual billboard campaign, and brought drag-queen story hours to libraries across the Wellington region. Educated at Victoria University of Wellington and a notorious finishing school, their work has the rigour of an engineer and the flair of a showgirl.
