Queen of Edinburgh: Anne Redpath and her Circle
Lecture to accompany the exhibition ‘Adam Bruce Thomson: The Quiet Path’
Curator and Art Historian Alice Strang will discuss the doyenne of post-World War Two Scottish art, Anne Redpath. Renowned for her joyously coloured still-lifes, interiors and landscapes, Redpath was the first female painter to be elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy. She was also a popular hostess in her flat in Edinburgh’s New Town, where she lived between 1952 until her death in 1965. This talk will celebrate her professional success as well as her friendships with other leading modern Scottish artists, including William Gillies, David McClure and Robin Philipson. Alice Strang was a Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Galleries of Scotland for over twenty years. She was responsible for the landmark Modern Scottish Women: Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 exhibition and book, for which she was made a Saltire Society Outstanding Woman of Scotland. She now combines her own curatorial and art historical practice, focussing on Modern Scottish and Modern British Art, with her role as an Associate Director and Senior Specialist at Lyon & Turnbull fine art auctioneers. https://alicestrang.co.uk/
