About this Event
The Innovative Small Farmers Outreach Program (ISFOP) & Growing Growers invite the public to join us for a fun and educational field day at Sankara Farm to learn all about soil health from Dr. Tunsisa Hurisso, an assistant professor of soil science at Lincoln University, and the historic Jessup Wagon with Mary Keeter and Izula Maximillen, Small Farm Outreach workers with ISFOP.
The Lincoln University Innovative Small Farmers Outreach Program features the Jessup Wagon 2.0, inspired by George Washington Carver's original Jessup Wagon, and continues his legacy of agricultural education. Carver introduced the mobile classroom in 1906 to empower sharecroppers with agricultural knowledge. Today, Lincoln University's Jessup Wagon 2.0 serves as a vital resource for small farmers, bringing education and tools directly to them. Through hands-on workshops, farmers learn about new tools, practical techniques, and safety measures, fostering immediate economic benefits for their growing operations.
This seminar will provide on-site soil health testing demonstration and an overview of soil health concepts and the current status of quantitative measurements of soil carbon and microbial activity, plant available nitrogen, and soil physical properties including soil structural stability.
