Quakerism 101: Foundations of Quakerism

Join us for a two-part series this spring of 90-minute sessions focused on learning about living in the Religious Society of Friends, including its histories, faiths, and practices. Quakerism 101 is intended for all in our community—as instructive for our newer members and attenders as it is a useful refresher for longtime members. All are welcome!
Quakerism 101 is a more in-depth immersion in the Quaker way than our usual programs. Our goal is to share the basics of the Quaker tradition in its historical arc—from its founding to how we exist as a 21st-century faith community—through readings, presentations, and discussion.
RSVP on our site if you are interested in joining so we know approximate numbers of attendees. Food will be provided.
We will provide a reading list for each of the sessions, which we invite participants to use to prepare for the sessions. But such preparation is not a requirement to join! These reading lists are opportunities for further exploration outside of our sessions together.
May 5 Topic: Foundations of Quakerism
— Historical origins
— Quaker Faith: What do friends mean by “the Inner Light,” “that of God in everyone,” and “silence”
— Quaker Practice: Meeting for Worship (the spectrum of programs)
— Quaker Vocabulary: Terms and phrases
— Find the day's syllabus on our website's calendar listing at archstreetfriends.org/calendar.
And mark your calendars: Sunday, June 9’s topic will be “Meeting for Worship” as an in-depth session about our meeting’s customs, how to center into silence, and the process for discerning about vocal ministry, and more.
