Our focus this Fall will be on mid-19th century country dances and quadrilles. All classes begin with warmups and introductory material. For the majority of class we typically focus on a few dances all in the same time period, breaking down each movement and building in new material as we go. We encourage participants to change partners throughout class, as this is an important part of building your skills as a social dancer (but we’ll never force you to do so if you aren’t comfortable.)
In beginner classes and at our events, we use the terms “lead” and “follow” to refer to the roles in the dance. All dancers are welcome to dance either role regardless of gender identity or presentation, and you’ll often find members of Footwork & Frolick switching between roles throughout the event. We choose to use modern language to ensure that all of our attendees feel welcome, but the concept of stepping into either role dates from the 19th century and was encouraged in dance classes.
