About the Programme

Celebrating Qixi and other festivals in Qing dynasty China

Speaker: Heng Kang Wei (Committee member, Qing History Society)

This session is conducted in English.

This coming Qixi, the Qing History Society (Singapore) will host a sharing session delving into the vibrant traditions of festival celebrations during the Qing Dynasty in collaboration with Qixi Fest 2024. The Qing Dynasty witnessed a rich tapestry of cultural traditions and festivals that reflect the diversity and dynamism of Chinese society during this era. Among these celebrations, Qixi holds a special place, embodying timeless themes of romance, celestial myths, and wishing upon the stars to become skillful in the arts.

We will also explore the mythical and cultural origins of Qixi and other major festivals, and how they are celebrated by the Qing imperial court, different regions in China, as well as overseas Chinese in Singapore. We will see how celebrations have evolved and adapted in the modern era, blending ancient rituals with contemporary practices, and become important part of cultural heritage.
