Agar firdaus bar-rū-e-zamīñ ast
Hamīñ ast o hamīñ ast o hamīñ ast
This inscription on the wall of Red Fort or Qila~e~Mubarak as it was known alludes to its former glory, when travellers and historians to the Qila would refer to it as “Hasin Gardun” the magnificent defensive fort…
And it was a sight to behold on moonlit evenings mesmerising all those who came to see it with more than a thousand lamps cradled by white marble niches beneath cascading waters reflecting the illuminated evening inspiring a European traveller to exclaim, “The Heavens would be envious”!
But Alas, what remains of this Fort, as impressive as it may seem is hardly a representation of Shajahan’s vision. The destruction that followed the Ghadar of 1857 left the once mighty yet graceful construction a mere shadow of its former glory.
