PRSSV are delighted to announce a three-day workshop on Qawwali singing and Tabla accompaniment techniques led by one of the UK’s most popular Qawwali singers Nafees Irfan and the ‘Qalandar Qawwali Group’.
Qawwali music is enjoying popularity all over the world. It is a form of devotional music with a strong beat, repetitive chanting and trancelike quality performed by a group of singers, instrumentalists, and percussionists. It is rooted in 8th century Persia and continues to be a popular form of music today. The term 'Qawwali' means utterance, and it refers to the devotional music of the Sufis.
Qawwali Workshop Dates: 26th, 27th and 28th July 2024
Key Features:
· Tabla students : You will learn the main Qawwali Taals and rhythms including Sitar Khani, Adha Tal and Keharwa, how excitement is built in a qawwali performance as well as how to maintain the tempo and progression in the groove.
· Vocal students: You will learn a couple of the iconic songs associated with Qawwali including ‘Man Kunto Mula’ and ‘Mast Qalandar’. Work on voice modulation/production where one has to sing softly and when to sing with aggression. Futhremore, you will work jointly with tabla accompaniment to develop understanding of how this music works with musical accompaniment.
· The Workshop will culminate with a performance item developed throughout the workshop.
· Students will have the experience of singing and playing along with professional Qawwals.
· Daily 11am to 3:30pm sessions with a 30 min lunch break. On the Last day the finish time will be 4:30pm.
Workshop Fees:
· All three days of workshop £220.
· For early bird £200, offer valid till 1st July 2024, 12pm
· Day Rate is £80
Eligibility:
· Singers do not need any prior training in Indian music. Tabla players need basic knowledge and training in tabla playing.

Drama Studio, First Floor, Sports Building, Harrow High School
Workshop Requirements:
- Tabla players are expected to bring their own Tabla.
- The classes will start in a timely manner, please get there five minutes early, so we can start on time.
- There will be a 30-minute lunch break.
- Please ensure you bring a notepad and pen/pencil.
- Please bring drinks and snacks as there are no facilities on site for you to get this.
