Escape from Hungary – Story of Courage
My journey in life began in Budapest Hungary. Growing up in war-torn Europe was very difficult for everyone. We never believed we would be living in a Communist Country, where you truly are not allowed to speak, think, or smile.
I stayed in Hungary until 1956, having graduated from High School, my parents recommended my brother and I escape the country, due to the uprising we were able to escape successfully. My journey on my own began, I was separated from my brother, made my way through Europe, and ended up in Germany living with a family while attending the University and learning the language.
My goal was to make it to America, however, that was the goal of many who escaped, and my alternative was Canada. I was able to take a boat to Canada. My first job in Canada was as a domestic helper and here I learned how to speak English. I met my husband in 1959 and was married in 1960, the true love of my life.
I began my banking career with the Royal Bank of Canada. We were able to migrate to the United States on November 2nd 1970. We gained our citizenship, and I continued my Banking career working for Security Pacific Bank and later Bank of America.
We all learn from our experiences in life, I don’t consider myself as courageous however life’s journey is what builds our character and ability to survive. I would love to share with you my story of survival…………..
