Purple Horizons | Spring in Tajikistan

Just 2 hours from Dushanbe in the Khatlon region are endless meadows of soft purple wildflowers rolling over gentle hills as far as the eye can see. Spryginia gracilis, as its called, is a wildflower, endemic to Central Asia and spread within Iran to Afghanistan, easily found scattered in abundance across the landscape of the Republic of Tajikistan in a haze of purple and green.
End of March marks the best time to spot the endless horizons of those beautiful flowers, occasion that can not be missed!
The smallest “stan” of Central Asia is bounded by her bigger neighbours Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China with Pakistan separated only by the Wakhan Corridor. Home to the Persian-speaking Tajik people and once part of the Samanid Empire, today its population of nearly 9 million spreads across 142,000 square kilometres of unspoiled mountainous terrain rich in captivating culture far surpassing its small stature.
Formally called Stalinabad until 1961, the capital city Dushanbe grew from a collection of trading settlements and bazaars, one of which still remains the most vibrant attractions in the city, the Barakat. The wide, tree-lined avenues lined with museums, monuments, and theatres and dotted with myriad cafes, teahouses and Tajik sweetshops makes for an ideal afternoon of wandering.
The immaculate Fann mountains of the Pamir Range are tucked away in the northwest of Tajikistan and capped by the majestic Lake Alexander, or Iskandarkul. A gem of mirrored green reflecting snowy peaks on it’s surface, the lake changes colours with the seasons and the time-of-day, from turquoise and blue to dark purple and green, surely the perfect spot for an iconic photo of pristine views.
