"Thus play I in one Prison many people, and none contented”A discovery from the Edinburgh fringe festival 2019: Shakespeare with puppets and music.
In the court of young King Richard, two courtiers fight about which is the traitor. Richard cannot bear the bloodshed, so he banishes them both. One is his cousin Henry Bullingbrooke, who vows to return. Richard, a notorious bisexual, is hated by the old guard led by John of Gaunt. When old Gaunt dies Richard seizes his lands. His followers desert him. Bullingbrooke marches home, deposes Richard, and takes the throne as Henry IV. Thus Shakespeare’s great cycle of history plays begins. Richard dies alone and forgotten in Pomfret Castle, but first he must face one more battle… with himself.
Bios:
Gregory Gudgeon is an actor. He played at Shakespeare’s Globe for 5 years at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was Zazu in The Lion King in London. He has travelled the world with artists like Complicité, Steven Berkoff, and the Globe. He moved to the Czech Republic to work with puppets and their makers, particularly Jitka Davídková (who made the beautiful rod puppets in this show) and the writer and animator Hannah Kodiček. On tv he plays Coroner Morange in Carnival Row opposite Orlando Bloom.
Lucas Augustine is an actor and musician. He has played Dr. Treves in The Elephant Man, Bloom in James Joyce’s Ulysses, Picasso in Picasso, I Want My Face Back, and Phillip Carter in Alan Ayckbourne’s Relatively Speaking. On screen he’s in The Tracy Ullman Show, Here Now With Alan Partridge, and the latest Batman film. Lucas built the guitar he plays tonight.
Linda Marlowe (director): Linda was Steven Berkoff’s leading lady in most of his plays. Her acclaimed solo shows in the West End and internationally include Berkoff’s Women, Diatribe of Love, and No Fear! She won The What’s On Stage, Peoples Choice Theatre Award as Best Actress in Berkoff’s Women in 2001. She has worked with Richard Burton, Peter OToole, Albert Finney and Gillian Anderson, and was a regular in Eastenders.
