Rembetiko is a Greek music genre that emerged in the early 20th century in the city of Smyrna (today’s Izmir in Turkey), mixing Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern musical influences. Connected to lower and working classes, with lyrics subjected to drugs, crime, prostitution or alcohol, Rembetiko was partially banned by the Greek government in the late 30s.
The movie tells the life story of popular rembetiko singer Marika, from her birth in Smyrna, deportation to Pireus, where she witnessed her father killing her mother, to her rise as a popular singer and her abandonment of her young daughter to tour North America. The story is interwoven with period Greek political realities (deportations from Turkey, WWII, civil war) and music performances of rembetiko composed by Stavros Xarhakos.
