Puccini\u2019s Tosca OperaDelaware launches its 2025–2026 season with Giacomo Puccini’s high-stakes thriller Tosca, presented October 17 and 19 at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington. In partnership with Opera Baltimore, regional opera lovers will have four opportunities to experience this electrifying co-production in two great cities this October. "Tosca remains one of the most performed operas worldwide, 125 years after its premiere," says OperaDelaware General Director Brendan Cooke. "Last seen at OperaDelaware in 2010, we are long overdue in bringing Puccini's masterpiece back to The Grand! This thrilling production is sure to please opera newcomers and lifelong fans alike."
Soprano and OperaDelaware Company Artist Emily Margevich, hailed by The New York Times as "charismatic and commanding" and praised by Opera Magazine for her "vulnerability and intelligence… [with] a voice of liquid beauty," will take center stage as Puccini’s titular heroine–Floria Tosca. Margevich, who made her mainstage debut as Musetta in OperaDelaware’s 2024 La bohème, now steps into one of opera’s most iconic roles.
She is joined by tenor John Pickle as Cavaradossi, the idealistic painter and Tosca’s devoted lover. Pickle last thrilled OperaDelaware audiences as Calaf in 2024’s Turandot. Audiences will remember Baritone Steven Condy for his electric performances with OperaDelaware as the title role in Falstaff, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, and most recently for his comic turn as Benoit/Alcindoro in La bohème. Condy will shine in a different light as the menacing Baron Scarpia, the scheming Chief of Police whose lust and power drive the opera’s heart-pounding drama.
Director Haley Stamats returns to OperaDelaware after her lauded 2024 staging of La bohème, praised by Broad Street Review as "inventive and always interesting." On the podium, conductor Domenico Boyagian also makes a welcomed return following his performances last season of La bohème.
The cast also features OperaDelaware Company Artist Gerard Moon as Angelotti, the fugitive political prisoner whose escape sets the plot in motion, and Brian James Myer (The Barber of Seville, 2022) as the bumbling, yet endearing Sacristan.
Later this season, OperaDelaware will return to The Grand (May 10, 13, and 15) with an epic company premiere of Umberto Giordano’s rarely performed Andrea Chénier with the OperaDelaware Company Artists center stage. Tenor Dane Suarez (Duke of Mantua, Rigoletto 2023) takes on the mammoth titular character alongside the inimitable soprano Toni Marie Palmertree (Mimì, La bohème 2024) as Maddalena di Coigny in this searing tale of love and revolution, set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. This production is presented during the 2026 OPERA America Conference hosted by OperaDelaware in Wilmington.
