YOU ARE INVITED TO MEET THE NEIGHBORS!On November 17, renowned California muralist John Cerney will unveil a new public artwork titled NEIGHBORS, following the success of his celebrated POPSICLES, the popular installation in South Downtown Palm Springs installed by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission from 2021-2023 that became a viral internet sensation drawing visitors from all over the world.
Following remarks by the artist at 11:00 AM Sunday, November 17, 2024, the new work will debut at 605 E Sunny Dunes Road, the same site where Cerney's iconic POPSICLES stood.
NEIGHBORS features five monumental figures of legendary icons, each standing between 10 to 12 feet tall. Visitors will be able to experience -and photograph themselves within - a playful scene that reimagines these beloved figures interacting with their surroundings. This composition is inspired by a visitor tour Cerney took of Palm Springs’s noteworthy celebrity homes, where he imagined these legends engaged in simple, human moments like retrieving mail. A signature John Cerney creation, NEIGHBORS pays creative homage to Palm Springs' rich celebrity history of the Golden Age of Hollywood and its desert playground.
The structural system supporting each painted plywood figure evokes Hollywood backlot sets. The subjects and composition were inspired by a visitor tour Cerney took of Palm Springs’s iconic celebrity homes, where he imagined these legends engaged in simple, human moments like retrieving their mail.
In Cerney’s own words, "I imagined what it would look like if tourists were to spot celebrities on their property doing something as mundane as checking their mailboxes."
The NEIGHBORS are:
-- Dean Martin, looking effortlessly cool with a drink and cigarette. He hasn't gotten around to checking on his mailbox, and it will be over-stuffed with mail.
-- Frank Sinatra, also looking cool, nonchalantly holding some love letters.
-- Liberace, both hands filled with fan mail, beaming with his signature glamour.
-- Marilyn Monroe, is elated at these small packages, which probably have jewelry inside.
-- Sammy Davis Jr., will be holding a bag of gumdrops, and his mailbox will be stuffed with candy that adoring fans have sent.
Fans of John Cerney’s work will remember the extraordinary impact of POPSICLES, which garnered some 100,000 social media posts across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter and TikTok, and featured in numerous travel websites and blogs. (POPSICLES is coming back also, it will soon be reinstalled by the Public Arts Commission in the city's new Pop Art Park downtown.)
John Cerney’s work, known for its monumental scale and captivating subjects, can be found in over 120 locations across the United States. Cerney's playful, narrative-driven installations often reflect his wit and creativity, making his pieces accessible to viewers of all ages and backgrounds. The work will remain on site for up to eighteen months, the approximate duration of POPSICLES.
Jim Landé, the site's owner exhibiting NEIGHBORS, is an indie film producer and was a staff member of the US Department of State and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Washington DC.
