What is Toastmasters? What does it do?
It is an international nonprofit organisation that teaches public speaking and leadership skills to people of all backgrounds and life experiences. Whether you’re already a pro at public speaking or a complete beginner, Toastmasters in the Blue Mountains can help you maximize your speaking skills!
It is a forum, an association that encourages people to improve public speaking and leadership skills gain self-confidence within a positive and supportive space. Meet new people, from beginners to experienced speakers, and build your network.
Far from a debate club, Toastmasters is a community of both new and experienced members who mentor each other in all types of speaking and leadership exercises. From hosting meetings to impromptu speeches and mock interviews, there is so much wisdom and wit to be learned at a Toastmasters meetup.
If you like the idea of improving your speaking skills but are a bit hesitant about what to expect, rest assured there’s no right or wrong here, and you won’t be booed off stage for forgetting your words! Toastmasters is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants can hone their skills in a completely no-pressure atmosphere!
We’re always looking forward to meeting new people and invite all visitors to participate if they feel comfortable, to learn great skills and insights, and above all, to have fun!
________
What goes on during the club meetings?

At a Toastmasters meeting, paid members will have a series of speaking assignments: www.toastmasters.org/Education/Pathways
which includes impromptu speeches, prepared presentations, panel discussions, and other various speaking formats. All of this is tailored to each speaker's needs, to help them refine their speaking quality and skills.
Feedback is key to Toastmasters! We believe helpful, effective feedback leads to improvement and greater speaking success. And Toastmasters provides an excellent forum to give each other positive but constructive feedback for improvement. In fact, we learn how to provide effective feedback. It's not easy. But Toastmasters club being quite informal (unlike our workplaces), takes the pressure off and helps participants ease into their roles, by providing a collaborative environment for improvement.
Participants will also be allowed to flex leadership and project management skills which include - rallying the team, putting workshops together, organising and hosting meetings (yes! we take turns), keeping us on time check, coordinating, learning how to provide balanced constructive feedback and many more that will need great people management, listening, coaching, and leadership skills. In our learn-by-doing approach, we don’t lecture members about leadership skills; we give them responsibilities and mentoring to help. Then we ask them to lead.
Overall, Members learn communication skills as they go by working with our online program called The Pathways and different modules, designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking based on an individual's need.
Public speaking isn’t something one can master overnight, it must be practiced. It's a muscle that needs to be trained. It's a muscle that needs consistency and practice. Even those who make a living by giving speeches still need to revisit the basics to remain competent and confident in their craft! Toastmasters is your perfect training ground.
Everyone joins Toastmasters with a personal goal. Whether it’s to think faster on your feet or to confidently lead a meeting, attending a meetup will help you reach that goal!
