About this Event
Public Schools First NC invites you to join us and other public school scholars and advocates in the fight to protect public education as a public and common good that benefits our society. Public education is the foundation of an informed electorate and democracy itself.
If you believe in our public schools, you will want to be a part of this informative program that will make you a more effective public education advocate!
Jennifer Berkshire: The Education Wars
Join us in Raleigh for an exciting morning with Jennifer Berkshire and friends! You may know Jennifer from her podcast “How You Heard” and her book co-authored with Jack Schneider that documents the predatory, profit-seeking forces threatening our public schools—A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door.
Jennifer will discuss her NEW book, The Education Wars that analyzes how our public schools have become a battleground for culture wars, the ascension of related book-banning efforts, the destructive and discriminatory impact of school vouchers, and much more.
Special Guests: Diane Ravitch and Josh Cowan: The Privateers
Diane Ravitch and Josh Cowan will provide essential context about the national movement to privatize education by discussing Josh’s new book, The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers (out in September). In The Privateers, Josh lays bare the history of tax-funded school choice programs and exposes the dangers of education privatization. He helps us understand the intricate web of actors driving voucher policies through well-funded and deliberate policymaking, legislation, and litigation. Cowen reveals how this insular advocacy network has enacted a flawed system that is harming our kids and our democracy. (Live via Zoom w/time for Q & A with Diane & Josh.)
Jennifer Berkshire & Friends: How to Win the Education Wars
In Education Wars, Berkshire lays out a road map for advocates to use in the fight to ensure that public education survives the current assaults. NC public education advocates and leaders will join Jennifer to strategize the most effective ways for us to work together to promote, protect, strengthen, and save public education.
