Abstract: The biblical memory of the conquest of Canaan includes the defeat of the indigenous giants of Canaan. The archaeological data relevant for the mnemohistory of these accounts includes stone structures in the landscape, particularly cyclopean architecture and dolmens. This correlation of the Bible with material culture allows for a new configuration of biblical archaeology.
Ron Hendel is a professor emeritus of Hebrew Bible at UC Berkeley. He is the author of many books and articles on biblical religion, language, literature, and culture, including a commentary on Genesis 1-11 in the Yale Anchor Bible series (coming out in September). He is general editor of The Hebrew Bible: A Critical Edition.
