Melanie Therrien of Wicked Illustrations worked with the city of Lewiston's Public Art Committee and Public Works to expand her Traffic Control Box Public Art Project. The project began as a way to cover up vandalism in the spring of 2023. 3 boxes were done at that time and received a great response. The project has expanded to 17 more boxes getting painted in June 2024, and another 19 painted in October 2024. A list of artists and locations, pictures of the boxes, a scavenger hunt for the boxes and printable coloring sheets for some of them can be found at wickedillustrations.com
Artists were chosen through a submission process after a call to artists was sent out. The majority of the artists are local artists who live and work in or near Lewiston.
Each Artist received a feature on social media that included a picture of their box along with their bio and statement about their piece.
The response from the community was outstanding. Here are a few of the comments.

Carol Gilbert on Bryce Cloutier’s feature shared with Lewiston Rocks. His box is on Sabattus St. near Grants - “Thank you so much for your beautiful creation! I have just moved back to Lewiston after being gone for 40yrs working for Disney. And I find such joy in seeing all these beautiful paintings! Last Saturday I saw several artists working on the boxes and I had to wave and Thank them as I was driving by. I live off main street and see the strawberry Ave. box everyday with the beautiful strawberries and blossoms on the box it so reminds me of the strawberry festivals I used to go to in Florida! Thank you again!🍓🍓🍓🍓”
The Sun Journal as well as Spectrum news featured the project in print.
Public Art is a great way to share art with others that is free and accessible to everyone. Art can not only help beautify a city by covering up vandalism and creating a sense of place, but it also helps create economic growth and gives artists opportunities.
