The search for meaning is as old as humanity itself. It’s part of what makes us human. We are meaning-makers by nature. Every child grows up asking “why”? So this winter we are going to dive into what is perhaps the biggest questions of all: Why are we here? Is there a bigger story we are a part of? Or is meaning something constructed individually from our own instincts, logic, and/or feelings?
This question was given classic expression 3,000 years ago in what the Christian Scriptures call Ecclesiastes and what the Jewish Scriptures call Qoheleth. “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the sage, “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2) This remarkable book wrestles honestly with the futility of life in a broken and fallen world, and also the meaning and joy that can and should be found when life is considered from the perspective of wisdom.
