About this Event
Join Southampton Forward and Padmini Broomfield for a FREE Oral History Training Workshop to capture the stories of the city's pubs!
What is the project?
Pub Cultures, commissioned by Southampton Forward, aims to use culture and creativity as catalysts for positive change in Southampton, placing people and communities at the heart of everything we do. Together, we're making Southampton an even better place to visit, live, work, study, and play.
We invite pub owners and local communities to participate in this celebratory project by:
- Listening to the stories of pub communities and landlords.
- Celebrating these communities by creating bespoke artwork in collaboration with them, through workshops and events led by local artists.
This training will enable you to assist us with Pub Cultures and be a part of collecting our City's stories.
What is Oral History?
Oral histories are recorded audio or video interviews that capture the personal stories, experiences, and perspectives of individuals. Unlike other types of interviews, oral history uses a biographical approach to preserve in-depth life stories or focus on specific themes or events.
What will the training cover?
The training will introduce you to the key concepts of oral history, how it can be used, techniques for encouraging people to share their stories, dos and don’ts, and tips for asking questions and improving listening skills.
How can I get involved after the training?
Once trained, participants will have an opportunity to work with the 9 shortlisted pubs and capture their stories. These stories will be collated, creativly written and shared in leaflets at the end of the project. The stories will also be archived in the Southampton City Archive.
Oral history is a key element of all our creative projects, so trained participants may be invited to contribute to other projects we are working on. There will be small fees associated with some oral history opportunities, and it's a great chance to develop your skills!
