Step into the heart of Hilo’s layered history with Puāhilo: Unveiling Forgotten Memories of Hilo, an immersive exhibit at the East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center's Ola Nā Iwi gallery. Through a thoughtful blend of archival materials, oral histories, photographs, and cultural artifacts, this exhibit sheds light on the untold stories and overlooked moments that have shaped Hilo over generations.
Puāhilo draws inspiration from the land itself—its whispers, its rains, its people—and seeks to revive the memories that connect us to place, identity, and belonging. Visitors are invited to reflect on Hilo’s vibrant yet complex legacy, from its bustling plantation-era roots to its rich cultural traditions and the quiet, enduring spirit of its community.
This exhibit is both an act of remembrance and a celebration, a way to honor what was nearly lost while creating space for renewed connection and understanding. We invite you to unveil some of the stories hidden in the shadows of time and discover the threads that continue to bind Hilo’s past to its present.
This exhibition was made possible by funding from the County of Hawai’i; McInerny Foundation - Bank of Hawai’i, Trustee; and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
