"Hi,we are PSYDOLL-We are made from IRON,PLASTIC and PVC,
and we are the newest in Japanese robotics technology--- like other Japanese robots."
"It seems like only last year that PSYDOLL were last in Birmingham and a quick look at my calender confirms that it was indeed April 2024 that they were last here. It evidences what a great relationship the band have with the UK that they can return so soon, and pull in the same size crowd. Bringing a touch of futuristic Tokyo to Birmingham, PSYDOLL have created a sound all their very own that mixes goth, industrial and metal to great effect and the resulting mix is all their very own. Guitarist Ucchi creates a wall of sound that can’t be breached and is softened somewhat by Nekoi’s keyboards. Nekoi also provides vocals and they have an otherworldly quality and are sung in a combination of English and native Japanese. The result is very likeable and the band proceed to cast their dark spell over the venue. The opening time of tonight’s show was pushed back half an hour which means that some people have to leave early to catch their trains, which is a real shame because PSYDOLL are on fire and deliver a solid set that culminates in latest single ‘Punk Shark’, a number that means no one leaves disappointed. See you this time next year?"
PSYDOLL – ‘Punk Shark’/’The Planet Without H20’(Single,2025)
Japanese cyberpunks PSYDOLL recently paid a visit to the UK for a well-received tour and they were kind enough to bring physical copies of their latest single with them. Needless to say we had to buy a copy, and were quite taken with the sound inside. ‘A’ side is the pogo-inducing, psychedelic ‘Punk Shark’, ‘B’ is the thought provoking ‘The Planet Without H20’, and together they make two very different tracks that show two very different sides of the band, you should definitely track down a copy and give it a spin.
One of the things I really like about this band is their artwork. It is an integral part of their aesthetic and compliments the music very well. It’s kind of like what Iron Maiden did with “Eddie”; once you see that ghoulish zombie on the sleeve, you know who the record belongs to. Although they are working in a different discipline, a similar thing applies here; even if this sleeve didn’t have a name on it, you’d know it was a PSYDOLL release. Anyhow, that’s why I suggest picking up a physical copy (especially as mine came with a free sticker).
Apparently the first track ‘Punk Shark’ was made for the Canadian movie of the same name; I’ve yet to see it, but this song has given me a good idea of what it’s like. This song shows the more upbeat, lively side of PSYDOLL; it is fast and dynamic and cuts through the air with razor sharp precision. Those programmed drums beat a dangerous rhythm whilst guitarist ucchi Hang-Up scrawls his sound on every surface. Nekoi’s vocals are suitably surreal and the whole thing combined is a piece of heavy, punky psychedelia; a bad acid tab or a mescaline nightmare.
‘The Planet Without H20’ shows a softer side to PSYDOLL. Whilst ‘Punk Shark’ found them in full-on cyberpunk mode, this cut leans more towards their gothic roots, and as befits the title, it’s a rather sobering song. It is a haunting cut and one that will follow like a spectre long after the disc has stopped spinning. Another interesting release from PSYDOLL and one which signposts great things.
