Last year we went to the dark side of motherhood for this holiday with MOMMIE DEAREST, and how do you top that monstrous mother? With one of the PSYCHO films of course!
Like Nightmare on Elm Street Part II, this sequel to a horror classic is the much-maligned queer-vibe entry in its respective series, as well as the most fabulous of its siblings. Picking up from the dry and respectable PSYCHO II, this film goes all out in picturing the world through the prism of Norman’s deteriorating mental state, going thoroughly off the rails and creating a whole new track in the process. This time, he keeps trying to recover from his past with a failed nun who’s reeling from a recent and similar problem with a domineering mother (superior). It’s surprisingly tender yet at the same time unrepentantly weirder, sleazier, scarier and more stylistically cuckoo than all the other PSYCHO films of the 80s, bearing the unmistakably colorful stamp of a queer sensibility in every artistic choice. Just check out this movie’s strange vision of hetero coupling…
Full of macabre humor, Giallo style and unique callbacks to the original film, PSYCHO III is a sadly lost gem, swallowed up in the volume of Hollywood horror sequel-itis, and unfairly written off as meaningless schlock ever since. It proves that gay movie legend Anthony Perkins, in his only theatrically-released directorial effort, truly knew the character better than anyone else. Now watch the guitar, and let’s revisit the Bates Motel, in this 80s horror masterpiece.
