About this Event
As part of their surf film festival EndThis Summer, 7th House is proud to partner with media-art collective EXP TV on a program that has been nearly a decade in the making, a deep dive into the subgenre of trippy and totally tubular PSYCH SURF cinema! Catch a wave of wild experimental and animated surf oddities (including John Lamb's surf toon classics SECRET SPOT and ROCKET 88 — with Lamb joining us in person!), alongside some legendarily way-out sequences and a rare screening of pioneering filmmaker Albert Falzon's earthy and gorgeous Australian cult classic MORNING OF THE EARTH (1972).
Though waveriding's boom in the 50s and early 60s spawned the first wave of surf filmmaking (and adjoining beach-blanket kitsch), it was when the spiritually minded, consciousness-expanding, earth-communing dropouts of the late 60s/70s counterculture took to their boards—and grabbed their cameras— that the genre grew into something more profound. As young people began exploring alternative ways of living, surfing offered a lifestyle centered around harmonious symbiosis with the natural world and the ocean's awesome power. Transcending the trappings of sport or hobby, it provided an ethos (reflecting, consciously or unconsciously, much of Eastern philosophy) that stood outside of modern society's hangups and trappings. A strand of filmmakers—almost exclusively surfers themselves—began capturing this way of life by infusing their footage with the experimental energy of the era, with fish eyed lenses, optical effects, animation, groundbreaking and mindblowing underwater photography and more.
7th House and EXP TV are stoked to share a lovingly curated mix of fine examples of psychedelic surf filmmaking and animation, including EXP TV's original short Barrier X-69, from their program Songs You Can See, and culminating with a rare theatrical screening of one of the classics of the countercultural surf film genre: Albert Falzon's sun-soaked, hippiefied 1972 classic MORNING OF THE EARTH.
Sans-dialogue and set to a groovy, earthy country-soul soundtrack, Falzon's film was a labor of love that overwhelmingly succeeds in fulfilling his desire to "make a beautiful film about surfing, the planet and the ocean.” Shot on rich, gorgeous 16mm film, Falzon followed legendary surfers Nat Young, Terry Fitzgerald, Michael Peterson, Gerry Lopez and more as they journeyed along Australia's beautiful North Coast and onward to Bali, camping on beaches, in makeshift treehouses, and surf shacks, serenely communing with nature on and off their boards. Of the film's lasting legacy, Falzon reflected, "It is important that we individually and collectively embody those qualities that will ensure that we live a sustainable life, not one based on overproduction and overconsumption but one based on sensitivity to all life and on all levels on this Earth. Morning of the Earth reflects in a simple way how we can endure and sustain and enjoy our life here and leave a small footprint and a better world in our passing.”
Whether you're a seasoned "ripper" or (...like this event's programmers) you've never been on a board, this afternoon's immersive films will sweep you away with an immaculate summer vibe and offer a transportive window to a way of life that is eternally entwined with the forces of nature.
