PSNY Free Verse Workshop: Photograph as Poetic Muse

Join us at this month's Free Verse, a PSNY initiative designed specifically by & for BIPOC creatives, with Sophia Leál!
About this Event

The power of a photograph can serve as a potent witness to a single moment in time. A plethora of emotion must be boiled down within a structured frame. In its poetic stillness, a photo can inspire the writing of poesy and even make something new altogether. I invite photographers and poets to use flashes of the past to inform the literary present and future. We will discuss our photo-muses and the use of the abstract to translate visual language and get to writing. Instructor will provide photographs if you don't bring a photograph of your own. (Confidential Space, Not Recorded)

About the instructor: Sophia Leál is a writer and photographer born and raised San Francisco. Sophia has exhibited photo work at SomaArts and other Bay Area galleries. Sophia's writing has been published by The Reverb, LatinaMediaCo and Flame Tree Publishing. Sophia is a strong advocate for the use of multimedia practices for artistic wholeness.

This workshop is taught by and for Black, Indigenous, and other Persons of Color with an interest in poetry. We invite folks to connect in this safe, generative, BIPOC-centered space: to share work, experiences, and discourse. At the end of every workshop, we welcome the sharing of resources, such as literature, community events, and grants available for application. Respectfully and consensually connecting with other members outside of the space is encouraged. If you are not BIPOC-identifying, we kindly invite you to attend other PSNY events. While topics do not necessarily center around being BIPOC, this community space is designed specifically for the BIPOC experience. Attendees of our Monthly Free Workshops for BIPOC Creatives receive a 50% off discount code for our Weekly Virtual Workshops!
