GRNSW’s Million Dollar Chase is advertised as the world’s richest dog race and has been running every year since 2018 at Wentworth Park, one of Australia’s deadliest racetracks.
In 2023, three greyhounds were seriously injured as protestors and advocates watched on in horror; two dogs suffered from fractured legs and one sustained a lacerated neck. These three dogs were transported to an industry vet, shockingly 45 minutes away. To the industry, this was just another day in a gambling-fuelled, brutal sport.
The greyhound racing industry is on its knees and we plan to keep it there. In May, we published images of the dangerous conditions at GRNSW’s GAP NSW Wyee facility, as well as images of injuries to greyhounds sustained from the conditions. This facility was temporarily shut down by GRNSW for repurposing as a ‘holding facility’ for more greys to be exported under the “Aussie Mates in the States” program.
Last week, we accessed the report from the former GRNSW Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Alex Brittan, with damning allegations of misconduct, animal abuse, under-reported deaths, and inflated numbers of rehomed greyhounds. We will not forget Jazzie and Carey’s stories who both died in transit. Jazzie suffered and died in agony and alone.
The gambling fuelled greyhound racing industry has always been engulfed in scandals involving animal cruelty and serious wrongdoing. While the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry’s damning June 2016 McHugh report into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW was a catalyst, following ABC’s exposure of live baiting and greyhound exports to China, similar scandals have festered for decades.
Despite government intervention and the publicly paid GWIC, the industry continues to demonstrate its inability to reform, and the government continues to fail all regulation attempts while greyhounds continue to suffer and die and millions of dollars of public money is wasted.
The industry repeatedly tells us that tracks are safe, and animal welfare is paramount but GWIC’s data confirms otherwise. In 2023, NSW was the most lethal state with 70 greyhounds killed on and off track and 4,212 injured at race meetings and trials – an average of 11 greys injured every single day. For the January to June 2024 period, 10 greyhounds have been killed and 2,116 injured in NSW. Most injuries include fractures to legs, neck, spine and skull.
Between January to June 2024, 50 GRNSW participants clocked up 97 charges with 135 charges against 103 participants in 2023, involving drugging, dealing drugs, physical and sexual assault, racist abuse, greyhound neglect, greyhound killing, arranging to have greyhounds killed and false statements.
Irrespective of the outcome of the current Inquiry and report due date of 13 December 2024, Premier Chris Minns has stated the industry will not be shut down. How much more greyhound suffering and death will it take for those on the public purse in our parliament, to do the right thing by these gentle dogs?
