CFMEU Health and Safety Organiser Esther Van Arend was sacked on the 25th of November, without any due process or consideration, over alleged ‘menacing conduct’ towards News Corp journalist Nick McKenzie, the reporter known for producing the sensationalist report ‘Building Bad’ on the CFMEU that aired on 60 Minutes in July 2024.There was no investigation or due process offered to Esther by the administration currently running the national construction division of the CFMEU; a simple letter from a ‘journalist’ was enough for a well-respected and effective OHS Organiser to be sacked.
This is clearly part of a broader effort by the administrator to further weaken the effectiveness of the union and further cements a dangerous precedent within the union, placing lives further at risk in a time when the union needs OHS Organisers like Esther to have their back and ensure they can return home to their families after a hard day’s work.
Join us outside the Fair Work Commission’s Offices on Friday, 13 December at 12:30pm to demand justice for Esther. We demand reinstatement, effective immediately and the immediate restoration of democratic control of union for its members
