On 20 January US president-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated in Washington. His election spells a continuation and deepening of US support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and expansionist Middle East policy.During Trump’s last term in office, his administration recognised Israel’s annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights, moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem and pursued normalisation of relations between Israel and Arab regimes. A staunch supporter of Israel’s settler movement, Trump pursued a “peace plan” that, if implemented, would have enabled Israel to annex illegal West Bank settlements.
Since his re-election, Trump has warned Hamas that there will be "all hell to pay" if hostages in Gaza are not released before 20 January. Trump's inner circle has been filled with hardlinofe anti-Palestinian figures. Trump’s appointee for ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, rejects a Palestinian state and has denied the very existence of the Palestinian people.
Netanyahu and his far-right cabinet have welcomed Trump’s election. They are determined to maintain indefinite occupations in Gaza, the West Bank and southern Lebanon, and have now moved troops deep into Syrian territory.
