About this Event

Protecting our Native Hemlocks: Treatment Demo with Olivia Hall, Hemlock Restoration Initiative

Tuesday, October 22 - 1 pm - 4 pm | ON-SITE

---------------------------------------

Hemlock trees in Western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect that can K*ll the tree in as little as four years. However, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands.

This demonstration will be useful for landowners, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. The methods shown are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety and guidance for hiring a tree care professional.

No special equipment or ability needed. Participants will be standing and walking short distances throughout the program.

Olivia Hall has been with Hemlock Restoration Initiative since 2023 protecting hemlocks and educating people about their value and how to save them. She graduated with her Master's in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University before moving to the Asheville area. She loves conifers and all of the ecological value and beauty they hold.
