Join us for an enlightening event on the past, present, and future of wastewater management in the East Bay.
About this Event

Join Love the Bulb and the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA)—the association representing municipal wastewater facilities throughout our region, for an informative session about one of modern society's greatest environmental achievements: wastewater collection and treatment.

Discover the fascinating history of wastewater management in the East Bay and gain insights into the sophisticated processes that protect our communities and environment every day. Come learn how these essential facilities do far more than just clean water—they're also crucial centers for water recovery and energy generation.

As we face 21st century challenges like climate change, our wastewater treatment plants are evolving in exciting ways. Learn how modernization efforts are creating multiple benefits for our communities, including enhanced shoreline protection and habitat restoration.

Your family can act as environmental stewards by making smart choices about what to flush. We’ll discuss what should and shouldn’t go down the drain to protect your household and the Bay.

About our speaker

Lorien Fono is the Executive Director of the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA) as of 2020. She has two decades of experience in wastewater and recycled water regulatory compliance, science-based decision-making, and collaborative management within the wastewater sector.  Her background also includes research of water and air quality issues, with a focus on the occurrence, fate, and transport of emerging wastewater-derived contaminants. Dr. Fono holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Toronto, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science, both from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in California.

Location

We will meet at Carlo Ferretti’s Cove, a mini-amphitheater about a 1-minute walk west of the bathrooms at the Albany Waterfront Trail parking lot. Google maps location is approximately 1 Buchanan Street. The Cove site is relatively accessible, but not very wheelchair-friendly.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO COME BY BICYCLE, FOOT, PUBLIC TRANSIT, or LYFT/UBER.

DIRECTIONS:

By bicycle: Bicycling to the Bulb is easy! There are plenty of bike racks at a highly visible location next to the bathroom at the parking lot, as well as fully enclosed Bikelink lockers (you must sign up for Bikelink in advance). The Bay Trail connects to the meeting point from the north and south. From the east, take the separated bike path on the south side of Buchanan Street, then the separated bike/ped path on the bridge that starts at the northwest corner of Pierce St. and Buchanan Street. At the western end of the bridge, don’t take the first crosswalk, which crosses the freeway onramp. Instead, loop around to the right and make a hairpin left turn at the bottom of the slope to head west under the freeway to join the Bay Trail.

Lyft/Uber: the address of the dropoff/meeting point is 1 Buchanan St., Albany CA 94710. Do NOT let your driver use Waze to navigate or try to approach from Gilman Street.

By public transit/foot: The meeting spot at 1 Buchanan St. is a 30 minute walk from bus lines on San Pablo Ave. and there is a safe bike/pedestrian path under the freeway.

Street parking: while the small amount of free parking at the waterfront is often full, there is plenty of street parking east of the freeway, and some parallel parking under the freeway. There is a safe pedestrian/bike path under the freeway. There are no encampments. You can park in the neighborhood near the intersection of Pierce Street and Buchanan Street east of the freeway then take the pedestrian/bicycle path that starts at the northwest corner of Pierce Street and Buchanan Street.

RESTROOMS, FOOD AND WATER:

The Bulb can be very cold and windy, so wear layers. Wear a hat, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and bring sunscreen and water.
