About this Event
Price: $40 - limited tickets available! Includes hands-on instruction and extensive Q&A.
While plumerias have adapted well to Southern California's temperate Mediterranean climate, winter is still the most challenging season for our plants. Mike's experience growing in a cold climate in San Diego's east county has given him the tools to help others protect their plants.
The class is offered in an intimate, in-person setting on his plumeria farm. He'll won't only talk about what to do, but also show you. The class format allows for an extended question-and-answer time.
He’ll be covering:
- Watering needs
- Fertilizing
- What to do with cuttings
- Protection from cold temps and frost
- How to deal with cold damage
- What's happening to my leaves in autumn?
- How does our approach change in different areas?
- Q&A time
- and much more!
What to bring:
- Water bottle (refills provided)
- Hat
- Pen
- Clipboard
- Close-toed shoes
- Wear sunscreen
- Aloha spirit
This class is held in an intimate, in-person setting on Atkinson Plumeria Farm in our open, shaded classroom. It is a rain-or-shine event.
Check-in begins 15 minutes prior to the event time. Please allow yourself sufficient time to arrive, park, and find a seat, as the event will begin promptly at the scheduled start time.
Before or after the class, you can walk around the farm among the 100s of plumerias and 1000s of blooms.
Cancellations are accepted up to 24 hours before the event. Eventbrite ticket fees will be deducted (around 8%).
About Mike
Mike has owned a plumeria farm in San Diego’s East County, on Mt. Helix, with his wife, Stacy, for 30 years. Annually, they sell hundreds of plumerias, host two large sales, hold 50 classes, trim trees for others, offer in-garden consultations, sell 15,000 flowers, and reach over 1 million people worldwide on social media. The PBS program "A Growing Passion" featured them and their farm on an Emmy Award-winning episode that showcased plumerias. He has taught plumeria workshops in Southern California (San Diego Horticultural Society, San Diego Botanic Garden, Master Gardeners, plus many garden clubs and nurseries). He is the only person to speak at all official plumeria societies in the US. He was on the steering committees for the 2016 & 2023 International Plumeria Conferences. He is a longtime volunteer and speaker with the Southern California Plumeria Society. He has authored numerous articles and has been interviewed multiple times, including by Martha Stewart’s website and the LA Times. His website is www.AtkinsonPlumeria.com
